To The Sea Again

Billy Archey McClellan - Edited by Ann Sallemi and Bette Waters

To The Sea Again book coverThere has been little written about the Merchant Marines after World War II. These courageous men died by the hundreds in World War II, victims of torpedoed cargo ships hauling supplies to the war theaters both in Europe and the South Pacific. They were civilians, unrecognized and unhailed by our government until decades after the conflict was over.

The book is fiction but the author based it on his first experience as a Merchant Marine taking a Victory Ship to Greece loaded with horses to help with Europe's post War rehabilitation. The story of these young southern males sketches a portrait of a slice of Post War II Americana, with shades of Harry Crews’ characters.
